Lorde's new album 'Solar Power' dropped about a month ago and it still hits different every time you listen! Read this article to take a look at her career and success.
LORDE
Ella Marija Lanl Yellich-O'Connor or Lorde as we all know her, is like the kiwi version of Billie Ellish (in the sense of starting her singing career young)! Lorde was born in 1994 in Takapuna, Auckland and attended Takapuna Grammar High School but left in 2013 to chase her dreams! Lorde released her first song on Sound cloud in 2012 ‘The Love Club’ that kicked off her whole music career when she finally went to a studio to record Royals! She was signed to Universal Music at the age of 13 which gave her a head start in finding her song style! Lorde released her first single that we know and love ‘Royals’ in March of 2013. It reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in UK, Canada, New Zealand and #2 in Australia. Five months later her debut album 'Pure Heroine' was released. Three years later her second album Melodrama was introduced to the world. Now Lorde has just released her third (summer inspired) album 'Solar Power'. Go have a listen after reading this!
Lorde has such a recognisable voice with an incredible range and a raspy voice that gives her songs plenty of emotion. Her lyrics are so poetic and relatable. It kind of reminds me of Lana Del Ray! Lana was in fact the inspiration behind ‘Royals’ but in an interview when Lorde was talking about Lana she stated. “She’s great, but I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking; it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know?” “I’m nothing without you.” “This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff and that’s not a good thing for young girls, young people, to hear.” Lorde is a feminist and feels strongly about the way women are portrayed and treated so it really shines through when the subject of feminism is brought up.
At the 2018 Grammys awards celebs wore white roses on their clothes to show support for the “Times up movement”. Lorde took her own approach to this movement and stitched a power message from the artist Jenny Holzers “inflammatory essay” on the back of her dress. “Rejoice! Our times are intolerable,” reads the essay. “Taking coverage for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstances can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old and corrupt must be laid to waste before they can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom. More of a politicised approach I'd say.
Lorde is a big shot artist and even released a song with Khalid, SZA and Post Malone (Homemade Dynamite - REMIX) in her Melodrama album and is going on a tour around NZ for her new album Solar Power. You would expect her to be performing at Sky Stadium or Spark Arena but no. As the icon she is, Lorde will be performing in two vineyards in Nelson and Havelock North. Two words. Days Bay. How unique for a worldwide famous popstar to have a show in Eastbourne!
TOP 3 FROM EACH ALBUM
Pure Heroine:
Team - It starts off slow then the beat kicks in and that's when the fun starts!!
White Teeth Teen - is honestly just really cool. The drum line is the show of the song. I would love to be the person who plays the tambourine in this song.
The Love Club - was the first song she ever released and I think it is the sound to every teen girls youtube video. It's really fun background music to have while doing homework.
Melodrama:
Liability - Sad and relatable with an ‘Olivia Rodrigo’ type chorus you can sing to while crying!
Writer in the Dark - It is a very mature song about the motion of a breakup and seeing the importance of strength and confidence.
Homemade Dynamite (REMIX) - Really fun song and gives off a bit of a 2015 flashback! The beat is pretty funky and has a very catchy chorus. Features Post Malone, SZA and Khalid.
I kid you not as I'm writing this she released a new song in her album Solar Power called Mood Ring. I Highly recommend going through a Lorde phase with Pure Heroine, Melodrama and Solar Power! Lorde is so talented and each song has a different ambience and she manages to nail every mood.
