RE-INSPIRING YOUR CREATIVE FLOW
When it comes to creating anything, whether it be sewing a piece of clothing or writing an English essay, more often than not we can experience troubles with our ‘flow’. The flow of our creativity is what helps us get excited for projects and think of new ideas or improvements for our masterpiece. But the problem with our flow is that we cannot always decide when or if it runs smoothly. I’m sure that all of us have had issues with our creative flow or experienced ‘writer’s block’ at some point.
Creative “roadblocks” are without a doubt something that I unfortunately experience all too often. Usually when I feel like a car stuck at an endless red light, I find myself searching for anything that can distract me, and then end up procrastinating further by avoiding the task. But over time I have discovered a few things that help me to stay on task and become inspired again. So I thought I would share a few tips on how to “Reinspire Your Creativity” when your flow is on ‘strike’.
1. Take Breaks
Sometimes taking breaks can be the best thing we can do for ourselves. Play some board games, hang out with friends or family, take a shower/bath, these are just a few ways we can stop forcing ourselves to think and let ourselves relax. By taking breaks and not pressuring yourself into coming up with world changing ideas, we can end up accidentally having a “lightbulb moment” and boom, you’re ready to create again!
2. Music
Music is definitely something that often sparks my creativity and helps me to stay on task. Although music can sometimes be a tad distracting if you are blasting those 80’s hits. So I recommend playing calm/acoustic songs (possibly with no lyrics) to just set the scene rather than overtake it.
3. Light ‘em up
Scented candles or diffusers are perfect for relaxing baths and “self care” evenings, but they are also great for inspiring your creative flow. Here’s a few scents that are great at boosting brain activity, improving productivity and of course helping you relax! Peppermint, Grapefruit Lavender, Cinnamon, Lemon and many more…
4. Comfort
You only have to do external exams in those uncomfy school chairs made of metal once a year so make the most of the comfy chairs, blankets and pillows while you can. An important factor when you’re trying to find your flow is making sure you are comfortable! Make sure you have a chair that helps you with your posture and try to work on a desk rather than a bed because then you are in a work mindset rather than a sleepy one.
5. Change of scenery
When we are working really hard on a project and pouring our heart and soul into it we sometimes find ourselves in a little cocoon and forget to break out of it. Remember that a butterfly doesn’t stay in its cocoon, it breaks free! A change of scene can be great for new ideas to come flooding in. Cars, cafés, libraries or anywhere with beautiful scenery are the top places on my list.
And remember, God is the master creator! He created the sun, moon, stars, ocean, land and every living creature. He created every one of us on purpose for a purpose! So the best thing to do is to pray for inspiration and God’s guidance when you create.
“He has filled them with skill to do all the work of a gem cutter; a designer; an embroiderer in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen; and a weaver. They can do every kind of craft and design artistic designs.”
