Five fantastic films to kickstart your pre-2000s movie marathon!
GHOST
Ghost was released in 1991 and it's an absolute classic. If you’ve seen Dirty Dancing and you're thinking of having a movie marathon, this should be 2nd on your list. The main actor Patrick Swayze stars in Dirty Dancing along with 38 other fantastic movies. Ghost is about a loving couple who have just moved in together, Sam Wheat (Swayze) is a banker, and one day the numbers in the account don't seem right as they're abnormally high! Sam confronted his workmate Carl about the high numbers because he was suspicious. That night when Demi Moore (who plays his girlfriend Molly) and Sam were walking home, they were mugged and Sam was shot!! After that, a series of crazy events happen, Sam protects Molly from a different world involving a special lady named Oda Mae Brown (she’s pretty cool). Ghost is a beautiful love story that will get you some laughs and tears too. This film won five Academy Awards at the 63rd Oscars, including best picture and best supporting actress. I highly recommend checking this movie out!

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU
Let's start with Heath Ledger- HAWT. I aspire to have the amazing hair Kat has thought of the whole movie. 10 Things was released in 1999 winning an MTV Award and a Chicago Films Critic Association Award!! This terrific movie is about a young popular girl named Bianca who wants to date a senior boy called Joey Donner. Unfortunately her overprotective father won’t allow it. Cameron, the new student at their school, has a plan to win Bianca over any way he can. Bianca goes home one day asking her dad about Joey who makes a new rule which is that she cannot date unless her boy-hating, feministic older sister Kat starts dating. Which they both thought was impossible until… To sum it up, the film is about the two sisters' polar opposite love lives evolving. Fun fact, this movie is based on William Shakespeare's “The Taming of the Shrew '' which is sneakily shown in the film in a few scenes. 10 Things I Hate About You is an iconic rom-com and you won’t find another one like it!

THE BREAKFAST CLUB
This is a basic story that has a brilliant outcome! Five students who are opposites in every way get put into detention together on a pleasant Saturday morning in 1984. Tragic I know. There’s a goth, sports player, a jock, a "weirdo" and a nerd. The Breakfast Club was released in 1985 with box office takings of 51.5 million bucks! The students were assigned to write an essay about “who you think you are" which spreads the misfits apart, then eventually brings them closer together by the end of the film. Not to mention there is a great soundtrack including Don’t You (forget about me), I’m the dude and Kids in America in the classic dancing scene. This movie is a great one to watch with your mates for a feel-good bring together movie. 10/10 would recommend!

DIRTY DANCING
Patrick Swayze makes another appearance in this cult classic/comfort movie; Dirty Dancing. Released in 1987 and directed by Emile Ardolino. This is one of the 80's most popular romances because of its twisty turns. Jennifer Grey plays Baby (Frances), a shy girl to start out with but when she meets dance instructor Johnny at a Catskill Resort everything changes. Being a guest at this resort, going into the member's dirty dancing club was the start of her rebellious adventure and love story. This is such a well-directed film with again a banging soundtrack including (if had) the time of my life and Be My Baby which is rather ironic because it’s her name! It seems that all of the films I’m writing about are romances, a bit of a trend you could say. If thriller or sci-fi is more your style then these movies may not float your boat, but trust me they are worth saying “I’ve watched it”. I’m not going to give away any more details so you’ll have to watch the films to find out more!

GREASE
Two school groups. Boys, girls. Leather and bomber jackets, what more could you ask for? This is a high school romance between Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta), they met one Summer, and gosh it was “dreamy” as they say in the 70s. Sandy lived in Australia but suddenly her dad was transferred to the exact same school as her Summer love Danny in America! What a coincidence. It’s a love story between a few characters, some work out better than others, but in the end, they will always be together...cheeky. There’s a lot of singing and dancing, but the soundtrack is so worth it. Their songs are extremely catchy and I even listen to a few of them myself. This film was directed by Randal Kleiser who also directed both Blue Lagoon and Summer Lovers. It’s a banger so buckle your seatbelts!
