FREEDOM & FASHION
In February I had the pleasure of interviewing Yasmin (Yaz) who is a good friend of mine and is WAY too humble about how good her style is. Not only is her fashion amazing, her personality is so lovable which is no wonder considering she is a very social person and has a strong people personality. Three words Yaz used to describe herself are diverse, quirky and sassy. When asked on the topic of inspiration and the person who has shaped her life the most she answered “my Grandma, she’s so sassy and confident, has the coolest clothes and serves people and God in so many ways”. Justin Bieber was also mentioned as the artist who inspired her the most. Even though Yaz isn’t the biggest fan of his music I think we can all agree how inspiring and powerful his change from the 2010s till now is. When I asked her what the most attractive quality of a person was she answered simply with; “being genuine and joyful”.
Everyone has gone through a rough patch at one point in their lives and Yasmin Kerr is definitely someone who has gained lots of knowledge over the last 17 or so years of her life. When asked if she had ever gone through struggles with her self image and how it might have affected how she dressed she replied “I definitely did especially at the start of highschool, it made me want to dress differently and try to dress “cool” so that I felt better about myself.” “Fashion is massive for me, when I’m dressed in something I like I just feel good and confident about myself.” It’s hard to feel good about yourself when you’re dressed in something society made you wear.
Yaz’s favourite colours for Autumn are cream, olive green and rustic orange, you can pair these colours with a simple outfit to add a nice pop of colour. And while we’re talking about orange, she mentioned her biggest fashion regret which occurred in 2019 when she wore a pair of orange and white padded flare pants. This unfortunate purchase was ‘not so matched’ with a massive white graphic tee signed by a racecar driver and a pair of air forces. It’s no wonder the 90s is her favourite fashion era, many fashion icons and trends came out of the 90s including Rachel Green - Yaz’s favourite best dressed TV character! The most significant item in her wardrobe is a beautiful cream coloured t-shirt that she found while thrifting at Recycle Boutique in Christchurch. The cream tee is one of the 5 things she would keep if she could only keep 5 items in her wardrobe along with her black silk pants, comme des garcons converse, black blazer, C&M hoodie and her navy velvet pants- which she absolutely loves! She usually doesn’t shop by brand but if Yaz had to pick a favourite brand it would be Stolen Girlfriends Club.
I asked Yasmin what she would do if she was given $500 to spend on her wardrobe. “I'd spend more on smaller things, mainly thrifting tops to mix and match and good for layering plus one statement piece!” Japan was her answer to which big city she would go on a shopping spree and described the country’s fashion as “unreal and underrated”. Her favourite upcoming trend is full piece outfits e.g silk top and pants, full length linen dress, velvet suit. Yaz is a real lover of leather items mainly for the reason that you can dress leather up or down by adding a pair of heels to your leather blazer for some dressing up or adding a jersey over top of some leather pants for a casual day out. Yasmin Kerr is a person who decides what she wears whenever she wants but if she was really struggling with an outfit decision she said would go to @jojomcdermott because they have a similar style. “Some people can’t afford to purchase things they want, with what you’ve got you should be yourself but remember clothes don’t show who you are”. These very wise words were Yaz’s answer to the question; should your style reflect your personality?
Some final skin tips from our glowing queen. When I asked Yaz what the three basic steps to good skincare she replied “honestly people over-complicate it, all you need is really good moisturiser with SPF, standard face cleanser- natural with not too many unnecessary chemicals. People also underrate oils but it actually balances out the oils in your skin so even if you have naturally oily skin I would definitely recommend still trying it”. That concludes our lovely interview with the one and only Yasmin Kerr. Thank you for being a great leader and mentor to Tyler and I and we’ll hopefully see you again real soon!
See you next time
